Position Summary:

The Research Associate will join a multidisciplinary research team whose overarching goal is to create foundational knowledge essential to improve high night temperature resilience of wheat and rice accessions. The Research Associate will be mainly responsible for the implementation of plot scale field trials for physiological and morphological measurements of a rice diversity panel that includes close to 400 rice accessions under high night temperature using field-based phenomics infrastructure. He/she will also conduct grain yield and quality analysis of selected rice varieties resilient to heat stress.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field experiments on studies on crop and agronomic responses of 400 rice varieties to high night temperature under conventional flooded systems.
  • Implement strategies, new tools, practices and expert knowledge in growing flooded rice in an environment of scientific excellence leading to accurate measurements of plant, water and field conditions.
  • Develop and design experimental protocols including procedures and techniques for successful implementation of field trials.
  • Manage, organize and coordinate field operations including the best field management practice for a rice diversity panel that includes accessions covering all 5 subgroups of rice.
  • Perform measurements of soil and plant health parameters, yield, yield components and grain quality using standard protocols.
  • Maintain working conditions of all field instrumentations and infrastructures and conduct basic instrument troubleshooting.
  • Assist project leadership in data management and basic statistical data analysis, summarize data for presentation and report field research findings.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Experience in growing rice under flooded conditions; exceptional knowledge and strong background in fertilizer, insect, weed, and water managements in a research experimental station; strong background in crop establishment under continuously flooded systems; long-term experience in growing of rice from international origins and able to manage intricate experimental designs; strong knowledge in measurements of yield, quality and components of paddy rice; experience in working with students and multicultural research team, experience operating agricultural field equipment, advanced knowledge in field data analysis, data storage/archive, and treatment designs

8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Additional hours as requested and/or needed

Other:

Train and supervise researchers, scientists, scholars and students on plant and yield samplings and ensure measurements are according to plant and specific standards and achieve high quality of field data.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture, Agronomy or related field

20 units in MS Crop Science specializing in rice;
