School\/Center Overview The Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania is a historic public garden and educational institution located 15 miles from campus in historic Chestnut Hill. Furthermore, the Morris Arboretum is on the National Register of Historic Places and is proud of its designation as The Official Arboretum of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Arboretum\u2019s actively curated collection of trees and plants numbers over 12,000. In addition, the Arboretum boasts a nationally recognized herbarium of over 40,000 specimens. As a key member of the Morris Arboretum Botany team, this position will contribute to the mission of this world class organization. This is a professional level horticulturist and garden management position which is responsible for all garden-related tasks in their designated Section of the Arboretum. As Section Leader, the incumbent is the primary advocate for Arboretum garden areas under assignment and plays an active role in its physical development, staffing, and budget allocations. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining specified standards of presentation that meet established institutional priorities. This position is required to become familiar with the plant collections, history and other pertinent characteristics of the section and be able to communicate that information to others in oral and written forms. The incumbent must be able to perform physically demanding tasks. Additionally, as Section Leader this position recruits, trains and supervises interns and seasonal workers plus coordinates the horticulture volunteers. The successful candidate is also expected to represent Morris Arboretum, including interacting with donors and professional societies. Qualifications A Bachelor\u2019s Degree in horticulture or a related plant science field plus 2 years to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Demonstrated ability to supervise staff\/volunteers. Ability to undertake the physical requirements of this role, including frequent lifting 25 lb. or more (occasional lifting up to 40lb). Strong verbal and written communication skills, including proven coaching & teaching skills. Previous writing experience highly desirable. A valid PA driver\u2019s license & experience operating gasoline powered machinery are required. The final candidate will be expected to obtain a pesticide applicators license within the introductory period.
