General Job Description
This is a supervisory position responsible for performing a lead role in maintaining the SFA Gardens in a manner that ensures the health of the plant collections and the safety of visitors to the gardens. Responsible for identifying and tending to landscape needs; supervising the work of subordinate staff and/or students; overseeing the daily maintenance of assigned areas; and assisting with special events and projects as assigned. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the gardens supervisor.
Essential Job Functions
Oversees the maintenance of garden beds and lawns in assigned areas within the SFA Gardens.
Supervises and trains subordinate staff and/or student assistants.
Regularly uses and maintains landscape equipment including, but not limited to, weed-eater, tractor, Bobcat, chainsaw, etc.
Plants, fertilizes, and applies pesticides in the SFA gardens, following regulations of the Texas Certified Pest Application License.
Maintains plants in such a way as to maximize their bloom/growth to coordinate with special events hosted and/or sponsored by the department.
Maintains the irrigation program for the trees, shrubs, flowering plants, and turf.
Maintains the cleanliness and safety of walking trails.
Identifies and works on special garden improvement projects after regular tasks are complete.
Non-Essential Job Functions
Assists in winterizing efforts, adding to plant collection and seasonal tours.
Notifies supervisor when plants need attention.
Makes suggestions for other plant collections or construction projects that will enhance the mission and programs of the SFA Gardens.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Knowledge of the planting and care of trees, shrubs and flowers.
Knowledge of landscaping and pest control techniques.
Knowledge of how to use and care for gardening tools and equipment.
Knowledge of OSHA, EPA and Texas pesticide regulations.
Skill in identifying different types of plants, trees and shrubs and distinguishing weeds from plant collections.
Ability to communicate and interact effectively with departmental staff and the general public.
Ability to complete assignments accurately and on time.
Ability to supervise, train and delegate the work of others.
Ability to obtain and maintain a Texas Pesticide Applicator License.
Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.
Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or a related field is required. Related experience may be substituted for required education on a basis set forth by the Department of Human Resources.
Required Experience and Training
Two years of related experience is required. Experience working in a public garden environment is required. Texas Pesticide Applicator License is required prior to start date.
