Virginia Farm Bureau
Virginia Farm Bureau is seeking a Commodity Specialist to work closely with other Virginia Farm Bureau Federation departments, organizations, and institutions from the public and private sectors to provide technical assistance, education, and regulatory guidance to address issues that impact the economic viability of agriculture. This role is based out of our West Creek – Home Office in Richmond, VA.

Identify structural changes in agricultural production, marketing and finance and the rural economy that could affect producer profitability.
Provide expert guidance to producers, VFB management and staff on agricultural and rural economic policy development and implementation.
Provide expert guidance to organizations, and state and federal agencies developing policies and regulations affecting producers and rural communities.
Manage assigned committee activities including program development; provide necessary research, analysis and information for policy development; and assist in the implementation of policy
Provide educational opportunities to apprise producers of opportunities that could improve their income and profitability and encourage producer participation
Motivate diverse clientele pursuing new agricultural enterprises and facilitate development of their proposals whereby producers can aggressively pursue the direct and value added marketing of agricultural commodities, renewable energy and related niche markets.
Assist with programs that stimulate the participation of private and public technical and financial resources in the development of direct and value-added agriculture.
Provide leadership and expertise to producer groups engaged in commodity or direct and value-added marketing projects and entrepreneurial and rural development activities.
Manage state and federal regulatory issues that impact agriculture and provides appropriate response on behalf of membership
Serve as a liaison to the small and beginning farmer programs at Virginia land-grant universities.
Work directly with VFBF departments to develop and promote programs for women, socially disadvantaged, veterans, and young farmers through technical assistance, education, and regulatory guidance.
Assist the department and coordinate activities to effectively promote programs and services.
Promote the activities and programs of the department with county Farm Bureaus to mutually achieve the organizational mission.
All other duties and projects assigned by the Director of
and/or President required to support the mission of the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation.
MINIMUM SKILL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of production and marketing of agricultural commodities.
Ability to develop and work effectively with diverse and multi-disciplinary teams.
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Strong technical skills- proficiency with word
Strong research and analytical skills
Excellent organizational skills
Degree in Agriculture, Economics, Finance or related field
Three to five years of experience in agriculture or related field
