Summary/Objective
The Gardener will be a critical, hands-on component of the Horticulture team, a non-supervisory position reporting directly to the Landscape Manager, and as needed will also work closely with Horticulturists and the Horticulture Manager. By utilizing their ornamental horticulture knowledge, the Gardener will ensure the effective hands-on care of horticultural displays, living collections, indoor landscapes, and will also perform general landscape maintenance duties.
Supervisory Responsibility
The Gardener is a non-supervisory position.
Essential Functions
The Gardener will ensure effective daily horticultural operations which will include:

· Participation in daily hands-on horticulture, urban agriculture, and grounds maintenance related activities.
· Record fertilizer, pesticide and herbicide applications. Maintain, under supervision, all landscaped areas and natural areas
Apply Integrated Pest Management practices as directed
Maintenance of permanent orchid collections and temporary displays as directed
Operation of typical landscape power equipment
Work with volunteer teams
Garden cleanliness
Competency or position requirements
The Gardener requires knowledge and experience in landscape management practices, including turf management, display horticulture, and Integrated Pest Management. Knowledge of subtropical and tropical landscape plants and landscape management practices is desired.

Environment/Physical
Demands
The employee will be able to carry up to 40 lbs. and work outside in varying climatic conditions that include excessive heat and humidity; and must be able to stand for long periods of time and safely traverse uneven surfaces. The ability to work with typical landscape maintenance equipment and materials is essential. Daily duties will require visitor interaction on a regular basis, and a standard code of conduct will be required.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full time position, Monday – Friday from 7:00-3:30. The employee may work Tuesday to Saturday if desired.
Travel
Occasional local travel may be required.
Job Requirements (Education, Experience, Certification)
Education and Experience
An Associate’s Degree in Horticulture, Landscape Maintenance or equivalent experience is required. Additional horticultural training and professional experience are desired.
Certifications Required
Ability to obtain Florida Public Applicator’s pesticide license within 6 months of hire is required. The Employee may seek additional certifications upon request and departmental approval.
