Extension Information Technology (
) provides technology leadership for the NC State Extension / N.C. Cooperative Extension including 101 off-campus extension centers. Our responsibilities include managing county extension center computer systems, backups, and wired and wireless networks; developing web applications to serve extension’s programmatic needs and those of funding partners; maintaining web and application servers; providing information technology and video education to employees; and collaborating with campus, eXtension, Southern Region, and national partners to provide technology solutions.
Essential Job Duties
The Instructional Designer will report to the Director of Extension Information Technology and will be part of the
Information Management team. The Instructional Designer will collaborate with
colleagues, extension administrators, Extension Organizational Development personnel, specialists, agents and staff to design and develop effective technology-rich learning materials, courses and programs. The work environment for this position is collaborative and team-oriented. The Instructional Designer will work with Extension Organizational Development personnel, communication specialists, content specialists, web application and web content developers as well as other extension personnel in pursuit of essential duties and responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
Designs and develops effective web-based modules and courses, including web content, audio, video and multimedia, non-credit learning modules or courses, interactive tools and assessments in collaboration with extension specialists, video specialists, and other web specialists.
Provides instructional design and course development expertise to develop online educational content. Initially content development focus will be for internal training of extension agents and other extension personnel. This scope may be extended to include efforts for public extension courses.
Assists extension faculty members in the analysis, design, and development of effective courses and instructional programs.
Builds positive, collaborative working relationships and actively encourages a collaborative and team-oriented approach to brainstorming, exploration and problem-solving for instructional production projects.
Consults with extension faculty and others on needs assessment, course or program design, project management and implementation of evaluation procedures to assess effectiveness of technologies and techniques in the teaching and learning process.
Researches and keeps abreast of trends, research and opportunities in the areas of instructional design, the scholarship of teaching and learning, teaching and learning with technology and distance education.
Communicates trends and research in instructional design, scholarship of teaching and learning, teaching and learning with technology and distance education throughout the University by various methods, such as writing, workshops and seminars both individually and in collaboration with others.
Collaborates with other support units within extension to advance project design, development, and evaluation.
Contributes to outreach initiatives by providing consultations, presentations, and workshops to faculty and staff, and participating in online discussions and conferences.
Gathers and reports on evidence of impact of instructional innovations.
Masters degree in Agricultural Education, Instructional Technology, Instructional Design, Educational Media, Communications or related field or bachelor’s degree plus equivalent years of experience.
Departmental Required Skills
-Experience designing and producing web-based course materials, including instructional websites, videos, web graphics, web resources, and other digital course materials.
-Experience in project management, including managing time, establishing priorities, distributing responsibilities, and meeting milestones and deliverables.
-Experience in using and developing content for online course management systems (e.g. open source and/or proprietary systems).
-Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, ability to work in a team and establish collegial relationships with faculty and staff.
-Professional preparation in using an array of instructional technologies including hardware and software, multimedia technologies, the Internet, and distributed/distance learning techniques.
-Ability to take initiative in networking with land-grant university system personnel
-Knowledge of emerging technologies as related to teaching and learning.
-Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
-Awareness of usability and accessibility considerations in instructional design.
-High level of independence and initiative.
-One to three years experience working with faculty in a higher education setting.
-Experience in designing and developing complete distance education courses using distributed / distance technologies either individually or in collaboration with others.
-Experience with various self-directed learning environments.
-Knowledge of Moodle Learning Management System.
-Knowledge of virtual classroom environments.
-Demonstrated success in the development of instructional multimedia.
-Proficiency using multimedia hardware, software, and equipment.
-Knowledge of agriculture and/or NC State Extension
