Monticello seeks a part-time Farm Associate to work at Tufton Farm, one of Thomas Jefferson's original quarter farms. Working closely with the Manager of Farm and Nursery Operations, the Farm Associate will develop a growing plan for a vegetable garden to produces crops for Monticello's Caf and value-added products for Monticello's Shop. In addition, the Farm Associate will be responsible for overseeing the growing, collecting, cleaning and storage of plant seeds for the Center for Historic Plants and Monticello's seed line businesses.
Qualified candidates will have knowledge of cultural requirements for a wide range of vegetables and fruits, plus experience with agricultural practices including field irrigation, crop rotation, season extension, harvesting and hygienic handling of produce, seed collection and processing, compost building and enhancing soil health. Maintenance of our vegetable fields, including weeding, transplanting, succession planting and safe use of powered agricultural equipment and hand tools is required. Working outside in all weather conditions, safely operating tractors and other equipment, and lifting upwards of 50 lbs. are essential functions of this position. Applicant must have flexibility in their schedule, to include some weekend work, including watering plants and participating in public sales. A background in farming, strong communication abilities and a passion to grow with the organization as we develop plans for a center for innovative agriculture, are all desirable qualities in an applicant. A college degree in agriculture or a related field is desirable, but not required. The application deadline is July 27th.
