Job Title:
Mechanical Engineer – Simonsen Iron Works, Spencer, IA
Reports to:
Director of Engineering
Purpose of this Job:
Perform all functions required for the design and development of new products and support of manufacturing and quoting functions as directed.
Essential Functions of the Job:
Responsible for Manufacturing Engineering needs, up to 50% of job requirement.
Maintains responsibility for all portions of a design project including, up to 50% of job requirement:
Developing a Project Plan outlining the steps and timeline for completion of the project.
Compiling and maintaining a list of Design Requirements.
Designing new products or improvements to existing products utilizing engineering principles and computer software (including 3D CAD modeling and FE analysis) to verify design.
Developing manufacturing drawings in accordance with applicable standards.
Specifying purchased components that are required for products.
Creating and maintaining accurate product information in the QAD ERP system.
Assisting with the development of operating procedures and manuals.
Validating product design by the testing of proto-type or finished product.
Directing other employees involved in the various phases of the design project.
Investigates product failures and identifies improvements for existing equipment.
Assures product and process quality by strict adherence to our ISO 9001-2015 certified Quality Management System requirements and applicable domestic and international standards.
Maintains product and company reputation by complying with government regulations and follows all safety guidelines and company policies.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional organizations.
Assists with nesting, quoting, and programming as needed.
Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Accomplishes any other duties as assigned.

No direct reports, but will direct work done by others during course of a design project.
Educational Requirements:
Mechanical Engineering Degree and at least 3 years of industry experience.
Equipment used in the Job:
Forklift, cranes, measurement equipment, and various computer programs including software for word processing, spreadsheets, 2-D drafting, 3-D modeling, and finite element analysis. SolidWorks experience preferred.
Number of Years Experience:
3 years preferred
Experience in agriculture or construction equipment industry is preferred
Reasoning Ability:
Good math and computer skills
Language Skills:
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, directions, drawings, and weld symbols
Ability to follow written and verbal directions
Ability to talk to others (internal
to convey information effectively and professionally
Typical Physical and Mental demands of the Job:
Concentration, attentiveness, independent judgment and discretion, manage multiple tasks, read, comprehend, and create work instructions, work orders, routings, and drawings. Must be able to see, hear, bend, stoop and reach, operate vehicles and equipment, stand for long periods of time (10 hours), use hands and lift up to 75 pounds manually.
Work Environment:
Exposed to all degrees of temperatures as well as noise and dust
Other Considerations;
Must be able to work effectively in a team environment and interact professionally with internal and external customers.
Must be able to effectively lead, direct and delegate to employees.
